Building Excellence in Pediatric Eye Care Through Specialized Training

At Srikiran Institute of Ophthalmology, we believe that quality pediatric eye care begins with well-trained professionals. Children’s eye conditions require specialized examination techniques, effective communication, and a compassionate approach that differs significantly from adult eye care. Recognizing this need, the institute invested in advanced training to strengthen its Pediatric Ophthalmology services.

To achieve this goal, our optometrists underwent an intensive six-month Pediatric Optometry Fellowship Training at the renowned Aravind Eye Care System, one of India’s leading institutions in ophthalmic education, research, and patient care. The fellowship was designed to provide comprehensive theoretical knowledge and extensive clinical exposure in pediatric eye care.

During the training, the team gained hands-on experience in examining infants, toddlers, school-aged children, and children with special needs. They learned child-friendly examination techniques that help ensure accurate diagnosis while making young patients feel comfortable and secure.

The training covered a wide range of pediatric eye care services, including:

  • Comprehensive pediatric vision assessment
  • Age-appropriate visual acuity testing
  • Cycloplegic refraction and pediatric refraction techniques
  • Assessment and management of amblyopia (lazy eye)
  • Binocular vision evaluation
  • Diagnosis and management of strabismus (squint)
  • Pediatric contact lens assessment
  • Low vision assessment and rehabilitation
  • Vision screening protocols for schools and community outreach programs
  • Counseling parents on eye health, treatment compliance, and visual development
  • Early identification of congenital and developmental eye disorders

The fellowship also emphasized multidisciplinary teamwork, allowing the trainees to work alongside pediatric ophthalmologists, orthoptists, vision therapists, and experienced optometrists. This collaborative environment enhanced their clinical decision-making skills and prepared them to manage a wide variety of pediatric eye conditions.

On successful completion of the program, Mr. Srikanth Penke returned to Srikiran Institute of Ophthalmology to lead the Pediatric Optometry services. As the Head of the Pediatric Optometry Wing, he has played a vital role in implementing standardized pediatric examination protocols, mentoring fellow optometrists, strengthening pediatric vision screening programs, and improving the overall quality of pediatric eye care.

The expertise gained through this specialized training has significantly enhanced the institute’s ability to provide comprehensive eye care for children. Today, our Pediatric Ophthalmology Wing offers advanced diagnostic services, early intervention programs, vision therapy support, and child-centered care that enables young patients to achieve their best possible visual outcomes.

Through continuous professional development and collaboration with leading eye care institutions such as the Aravind Eye Care System, Srikiran Institute of Ophthalmology remains committed to delivering world-class pediatric eye care, preventing avoidable childhood blindness, and helping every child enjoy the gift of clear vision and a brighter future.
