There are over 7.6 billion people in the world. Over 1.3 billion of these people reside in India. Around, 75%, or over 750 million people live in villages, and about 60% of these people are destitute, living well below the poverty line. Located on the southeastern coast, we find the state of Andhra Pradesh, with an enormous population which of over 5.3 crores (53 Million), Andhra Pradesh has enormous potential, but it is hindered by the fact that primary healthcare here is almost non-existent. Indians living without vision. Addressing these issues is a considerable task in itself, involving much time and effort. Through the coordinated efforts of a select few individuals and caring organizations, coupled with the desire to make a difference.

The Srikiran Institute of Ophthalmology has taken some critical steps to resolve some of the fundamental issues that afflict the people in rural Andhra Pradesh.

Located 10kms from Kakinada, the Srikiran Institute of Ophthalmology can be found on a five acre site that typifies the serene
countryside in Andhra Pradesh. For over 26 years, the Institute has been addressing the needs of the local community, and has taken it upon itself to provide quality eye care that is both affordable and accessible to everyone.

How we operate

The modern facilities staffed by compassionate doctors continue to develop as the institute keeps on procuring the latest equipment necessary to provide quality eye care. Facing the prospect of providing eye care services to a population of over 20 million from six different districts, Srikiran has developed into an all encompassing Institute spread out over an area of 50,000 square feet, with a total of five buildings.


With separate outpatient areas for paying and non paying patients, ten outpatient clinics, four operating theatres, an auditorium, a cafeteria, two optical shops, a pharmacy, and two separate hostels for men and women, all backed-up by generator power, Srikiran has become a self contained world providing the best care available.

 

In addition to this, The Srikiran Institute now has 126 inpatient beds, and 24 hour emergency service, so proper care and instruction can be provided and any post-operative complications are reduced to the bare minimum and taken care of.
Reflecting its dynamic nature, the Institute is planning to develop into a centre of excellence in eye care for the region. This will include all specialties in ophthalmology and an eye bank. At the present time, Srikiran has 16 ophthalmologists and 5 DNB students in training.
In addition to this, there are 125 other full time employees indispensable to the Institute. These include 14 computer specialists, 23 administrative staff, 18 vision technicians, 10 outpatient personnel, 22 people within the operation theaters, 18 ward sisters, 8 transportation staff and 12 support services personnel, who make the Institute run so efficiently.

Currently, there are also 22 trainees in various departments preparing themselves to assist in the appropriate sections of the eye hospital when needed.

In order to make the Institute self-supporting, charges are levied only on patients who can afford to pay for the services. The services are all reasonably priced to make it affordable to all income groups. Whether paid patients or not, the high standards of excellence are upheld by providing the same medical service to all, regardless of socio-economic status. Services that are allotted to the paid category are based on medical treatment, procedures and the requirements of the patients.

Working efficiently, with a dedication the organization provides eye care for the needy though as highly qualified staff. The modern facilities staffed by highly qualified doctors have provided quality eye care to over 30,83,908 out-patients and performed over 2,62,604 surgeries in Srikiran’s relatively short history.

Gaining the confidence of the regional population, Srikiran now stands as a pioneer in providing quality eye-care services. To this date the Institute has the capacity to treat 350 outpatients and 80 inpatients per day. The productive utilization of the available space, manpower, and the commitment of the team to provide excellent eye care have become major strengths on the path to eradicate preventable and curable blindness in the region. Coupled with this, the institute has been very fortunate to have continuous and dedicated support from the community in achieving these objectives.

The Government of Andhra Pradesh recognised Srikiran Institute of Ophthalmology as the best NGO in this field of Ophthalmology for participating and working towards eradication of blindness
